NIOSH addresses dangers of dampness in buildings

NIOSH recently issued an alert about preventing occupational respiratory disease caused by exposure to dampness in offices, schools and other non-industrial buildings.

Excessive moisture - which can be triggered by roof or window leaks, high indoor humidity, and flooding - can lead to growth of mold, fungi and bacteria; the release of volatile organic compounds; and the breakdown of building materials.

NIOSH releases video on rig moving

A new video provides safety information on rig moving for truckers in the oil and gas industry.

The 27-minute video covers a wide range of topics, including communicating with hand signals, working safely around cranes and forklifts, using fall protection, dealing with adverse weather, and moving a rig when electric lines are nearby.

FMCSA encourages carriers to check CSA scores following changes

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is encouraging commercial motor vehicle carriers to review their scores and safety data in the Compliance, Safety, Accountability program's Safety Measurement System following changes that went into effect Dec. 3, 2012.

Group launches silica resource site

Launched by the AFL-CIO affiliated Center for Construction Research and Training, Work Safely with Silica aims to educate workers on how to control silica and lower the risk of silicosis. The site features tips and tools to assist workers and contractors in identifying silica hazards, understanding health risks, and finding methods to control silica dust. Among the features on the site is an e-tool to allow users to create a job-specific plan.

NIOSH provides tips for protecting health care workers from hazardous drugs

A new document from NIOSH addresses medical surveillance for health care workers exposed to hazardous drugs. Workers most at risk include pharmacists, nurses, physicians, home health care workers and housekeepers.

Obesity documentary available online

"The Weight of the Nation," a four-part 2012 documentary on the obesity problem is available for free online viewing and embedding on a website or organization intranet.

The project is a presentation of HBO and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
