Guidance on designing optimal work shift durations

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society have issued guidance on designing optimal work shift durations. The guidelines differ from past studies that often set maximum shift durations in a one-size-fits-all approach focused on physical fatigue. According to the press release, "Rather than provide a single, generic recommendation, these new guiding principles involve taking a more holistic view when setting customized shift durations for each individual workplace, considering not just physical fatigue, but mental fatigue, time of day, job requirements, safety risks, lifestyle factors, and health."



Annual 'Roadcheck' uncovers out-of-service vehicle, driver violations

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's 34th annual International Roadcheck took place across North America from May 4 to 6. Inspectors performed more than 40,000 examinations during the 72-hour enforcement and safety outreach event, placing 16.5% of vehicles and 5.3% of drivers out of service.

Among the citations issued:

Hours-of-service violations were the most common driver out-of-service violation, at 41.5%. Out of the 23,135 North American Standard Level I inspections conducted, 21.8% of the vehicles and 5.2% of the drivers were found with out-of-service violations.

For the ninth year in a row, Industrial Safety & Hygiene News held its annual Readers' Choice Awards to find the favorite personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment suppliers.



NIOSH extends comment period on RFI for PPE and underserved workers

NIOSH has extended until Oct. 15 the comment period on a Request for Information on personal protective equipment use, availability, accessibility, acceptability, and knowledge for "underserved" workers, according to a notice published in the Aug. 16 Federal Register. Underserved PPE user populations may include workers who are of an atypical size, members of a gender, racial, ethnic, or linguistic minority group, engage in nontraditional worker activities, or others not adequately served by PPE industry.
